Architectural Portal Relief and Complex Interlace Capital of Kazreti Trinity Monastery: Stylistic and Historical Analysis
2827
Creation Date: First quarter of the 13th century (circa 1213–1222 CE), constructed and lavishly decorated during the reign of King George IV Lasha. Period: High Medieval Period / The Golden Age of Georgian Architecture and Monumental Stone Sculpture (13th Century).
Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned on the structural capital of a doorway portal or architectural bay, this carved block acts as a transitional load-bearing and decorative element that frames the sacred thresholds of the monastic church. Apotropaic and Cosmological Significance: The intricate, endless circular interlace pattern acts as a potent apotropaic talisman designed to ward off malevolent forces. Symbolically, the continuous looping geometry represents divine infinity, cosmic order, and the eternal continuity of spiritual creation.
