Architectural Portal Relief and Avian Motif of Pitareti Monastery: Stylistic and Historical Analysis

2819

Creation Date: 1213–1222 CE (constructed during the reign of King George IV Lasha, at the height of the medieval Georgian Golden Age). Period: High Medieval Period / Georgian Golden Age Architecture and Monumental Stone Sculpture (13th Century).

Architectural and Liminal Role: Incorporated into the sculptural programs framing the sacred church portals, this relief serves to visually enrich the transitional threshold between the secular exterior and the holy interior of the monastery. Symbolic and Apotropaic Significance: In Christian iconography, avian representations—such as doves, eagles, or peacocks—symbolize the human soul, divine resurrection, spiritual ascension, and paradise. Combined with the apotropaic function of portal guardians, the bird serves as a celestial messenger and a protective emblem guarding the sacred sanctuary.
