Architectural Portal Border and Geometric Relief of Pitareti Monastery: Stylistic and Historical Analysis

2826

Creation Date: 1213–1222 CE (constructed during the reign of King George IV Lasha, at the height of the medieval Georgian Golden Age). Period: High Medieval Period / Georgian Golden Age Architecture and Monumental Stone Sculpture (13th Century).

Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned along the structural stone framing of the main church portal, this relief assembly serves to articulate the transition between the plane of the exterior wall and the deeply recessed doorway leading into the sacred interior. Apotropaic and Symbolic Significance: The combination of braided crosses, spherical celestial bosses, rosette fertility symbols, and endless interlace networks functions as a powerful apotropaic barrier designed to ward off malevolent forces. Symbolically, it represents the harmony of creation, divine infinity, and the gateway to spiritual salvation.
