Architectural Portal and Interlaced Medallion Relief of Tsugrugasheni Church: Stylistic and Historical Analysis

2829

Creation Date: 1212–1222 CE (constructed and decorated during the reign of King George IV Lasha, son of Queen Tamar). Period: High Medieval Period / The Golden Age of Georgian Architecture and Monumental Stone Sculpture (Early 13th Century).

Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned on the structural capital and framing borders of an exterior doorway or window portal, this carved block acts as a transitional load-bearing and decorative element that marks the sacred thresholds of the church. Apotropaic and Cosmological Significance: The intricate, endless circular interlace pattern functions as a potent apotropaic talisman designed to ward off malevolent forces. Symbolically, the continuous looping geometry represents divine infinity, cosmic order, and the eternal continuity of spiritual creation.
