Architectural Pier Capital, Basket-Weave Frieze, and Paired Colonnettes of Nikortsminda Cathedral: Stylistic and Historical Analysis
2847
Creation Date: 1010–1014 CE (constructed, carved, and decorated during the reign of King Bagrat III, marking the inaugural zenith of the unified Georgian architectural and stone-sculpture renaissance). Period: High Medieval Period / Early Unified Georgian Architectural and Sculptural Golden Age (Early 11th Century).
Architectural and Structural Role: Positioned at the junction of structural wall supports and arcade window surrounds, this assembly physically manages load transitions while creating rhythmic visual breaks across the exterior facade. Apotropaic and Cosmological Significance: The intricate basket-weave interlace, running wave bands, and protective rope moldings served as an apotropaic barrier to ward off malevolent forces from the sacred enclosure. Symbolically, continuous textile-like weaves represented the binding together of spiritual truths and the protective veil of faith.
