Architectural Pier Capital and Palmette Frieze Relief of Bolnisi Sioni: Stylistic and Historical Analysis
2840
Creation Date: 493–498 CE (constructed, carved, and dedicated during the late 5th century under the reign of King Vakhtang Gorgasali and King Dachi of Iberia, representing one of the earliest securely dated monumental stone-carving programs in Christian Georgia). Period: Early Medieval Period / Late Antiquity Transition / The Bolnisi Era of Georgian Architectural Sculpture (Late 5th Century).
Architectural and Structural Role: Positioned at the top of a structural pier or wall pillar to support the springline of a stone arch, serving as both a weight-bearing transitional impost and a decorative framing element. Apotropaic and Thematic Significance: The recurring palmette trees and stylized vine shoots symbolize the Tree of Life, paradise, and the eternal renewal of the soul through baptism and faith. The flanking rosettes act as protective solar symbols and early Christian apotropaic seals.
