Architectural Facade Relief of the Descending Angel of the Last Judgment (Nikortsminda Cathedral): Stylistic and Historical Analysis

2844

Creation Date: 1010–1014 CE (constructed, carved, and decorated during the reign of King Bagrat III, marking the inauguration of the unified Georgian architectural and artistic renaissance). Period: High Medieval Period / Early Unified Georgian Architectural and Sculptural Golden Age (Early 11th Century).

Architectural and Liturgical Role: Positioned on the narrative exterior wall programs of the cathedral, this relief served as an active visual theological text for worshippers approaching the sanctuary, translating complex eschatological doctrines into dynamic visual forms. Apotropaic and Eschatological Significance: The descending angel figure functions as both an eschatological herald of the Last Judgment and an apotropaic guardian entity. The rhythmic linear patterns and surrounding vegetal scrolls symbolize the cosmic order, divine intervention, and the ultimate transformation of the material world under spiritual law.
