Architectural Facade Portal, Compound Pilasters, and Interlaced Cross Relief of Nikortsminda Cathedral: Stylistic and Historical Analysis

2845

Creation Date: 1010–1014 CE (constructed, carved, and decorated during the reign of King Bagrat III, marking the inaugural zenith of the unified Georgian architectural and stone-sculpture renaissance). Period: High Medieval Period / Early Unified Georgian Architectural and Sculptural Golden Age (Early 11th Century).

Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned at primary exterior threshold portals and window surrounds, this relief assembly physically frames and articulates the structural transition between the secular outer world and the sacred interior space of the cathedral. Apotropaic and Cosmological Significance: The interwoven geometric cross, continuous foliate chains, and protective cable moldings served as a potent apotropaic shield designed to ward off malevolent forces from the sanctuary entrance. Symbolically, the unending strapwork loops and flourishing palmettes represented the eternal network of divine grace, cosmic order, and spiritual resurrection.
