Architectural Drum Facade, Blind Arcade, and Window Surrounds of Nikortsminda Cathedral: Stylistic and Historical Analysis

2846

Creation Date: 1010–1014 CE (constructed, carved, and decorated during the reign of King Bagrat III, marking the inaugural zenith of the unified Georgian architectural and stone-sculpture renaissance). Period: High Medieval Period / Early Unified Georgian Architectural and Sculptural Golden Age (Early 11th Century).

Architectural and Liturgical Role: Positioned on the elevated drum and window zones of the exterior facade, this decorative system frames the primary sources of natural light entering the central dome space, visually elevating the structural mass toward the heavens. Apotropaic and Cosmological Significance: The continuous vegetative scrolls, interwoven strapwork crosses, and protective cable moldings served as a potent apotropaic shield designed to ward off malevolent forces from the sacred enclosure. Symbolically, the unending vegetal tendrils and pinecone motifs represented the Tree of Life, spiritual abundance, and the cosmic order of creation.
