Architectural Circular Foliate Window Relief and Pierced Medallion: Stylistic and Historical Analysis
2836
Creation Date: 12th to early 13th century CE (constructed and decorated during the height of the medieval Georgian Golden Age). Period: High Medieval Period / Golden Age of Georgian Architecture and Monumental Stone Sculpture (Late 12th to Early 13th Century).
Architectural and Liminal Role: Positioned as an exterior window oculus or decorative wall medallion, this circular relief permitted controlled light and ventilation into the sacred interior while breaking the flat mass of the masonry facade. Apotropaic and Cosmological Significance: The central circular aperture combined with unending concentric foliate scrolls served as a powerful apotropaic mandala designed to ward off malevolent forces. Symbolically, the radiating palmettes and infinite vegetal loops represented the tree of life, divine creation, and spiritual illumination.
