Arch of Septimius Severus in the Roman Forum
3063
Date Created: Erected in 203 AD to celebrate the decennalia (the ten-year anniversary) of Emperor Septimius Severus. Period: The Severan Dynasty (High Imperial Roman Period), spanning from 193 to 211 AD. This epoch was characterized by monumental triumphal architecture, dynamic figural reliefs, and a distinct stylistic transition toward expressionistic, high-contrast surface textures that prefigured Late Antique art.
Triumphal Propaganda and Dynastic Legitimization: Functionally, the arch served as a monumental urban gateway and dynastic billboard to commemorate Emperor Septimius Severus's decisive military victories in Parthia and Arabia. Imperial Ideology: Symbolically, the expansive sculptural reliefs, military prisoners, and divine personifications embodied the eternal triumph of Rome, the victoria augusti, and the consolidation of power under the new Severan dynasty.
