The Annunciation Carved Wooden Portal Panels of Saint-Pierre
2032
French Renaissance / Mannerist, c. 1520–1550 CE
A pair of carved hardwood door panels from the portal of the Church of Saint-Pierre in Avignon, executed in the French Renaissance style c. 1520–1550. The left panel depicts the Virgin Mary seated beneath a coffered arched niche with an open book, while the right shows the Archangel Gabriel descending amid cloud formations with the dove of the Holy Spirit. Both figures occupy classical Renaissance architectural frameworks with pilasters, shell cartouches, and coffered arch moldings. The vertical stiles and outer borders carry dense Renaissance strapwork, symmetrical cartouches, and looping rinceaux. Deep undercutting behind the angel's drapery folds, hair, and wings produces chiaroscuro shadow giving the hardwood a vivid illusion of sculptural depth.
