Angelic Sculptures and Neo-Byzantine Mosaics at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière

2926

Date: The construction and intricate interior decoration of the basilica took place between 1872 and 1896 CE, with the sculptural and mosaic programs executed primarily in the 1870s and 1880s. Period: Late 19th-century Historicism / Neo-Gothic and Neo-Byzantine Revival (1872–1896).

Architectural Role: Functions as an elaborate decorative transition between the massive structural piers and the elevated vaulted ceiling, articulating the spatial rhythm of the sanctuary while dissolving heavy stone walls into a vibrant tapestry of color and light. Symbolic, Cultural, and Religious Purpose: Conceived to manifest the triumph of the Catholic faith and the spiritual protection of the Virgin Mary over Lyon. The angels with lyres and the mosaic imagery symbolize the heavenly host praising God, creating an immersive, transcendent atmosphere of divine majesty.
