Angel Choir Roof Boss at Lincoln Cathedral
3169
Creation Date: Carved and installed between 1256 and 1280 CE, during the major rebuilding and eastern extension campaign of the cathedral known as the Angel Choir. Period: The English Decorated Gothic Period (Thirteenth-century Early English Gothic and Decorated transition), an epoch celebrated for structural innovation, complex tierceron and lierne vaulting systems, and extraordinarily sophisticated botanical stone-carving mastery.
Structural Rib Junction and Load Dissipation: Functioned structurally as the keystones or bosses at the convergence of ribbed vaults, helping to lock the intersecting ribs into place while concealing structural joinery. Theological and Cosmic Symbolism: The lush, cascading botanical foliage symbolizes the uncreated grace of God, the Tree of Life, and the Paradise of heaven, echoing the celestial themes of the surrounding Angel Choir sculptures.
