Spain (Córdoba, Madinat al-Zahra)
10th-Century Umayyad Capital from Madinat al-Zahra
2858
Date: 10th century CE (circa 950–1000 CE). Period: The height of the Umayyad Caliphate in Iberia (Al-Andalus).
Architectural Role: To crown a column shaft within elite palatine structures, reception halls, or religious arcades in Caliphal Córdoba. Symbolic and Aesthetic Purpose: The "vegetal vocabulary"—consisting of stylized palm fronds, vines, and geometric arabesques—served a profound spiritual purpose, symbolizing the lush, eternal gardens of Paradise (Jannah) described in the Qur’an. It transformed rigid architectural support into an organic, blooming canopy.
